Three Peterborough mens crews win gold at the Ontario Championships in Welland.
One silver medal and seven bronze medals completed a successful weekend for the local club.
The senior men's quad provided the highlight of Saturday's races, a day which saw race delays due to inclement weather. The PRC quad is Mike Davidson, Robert Baldwin, Brent Holmes, and Matt McCarthy.
A major upset in the Under 23 lightweight four event crew. Peterborough won gold beating a crew of some Ontario Team members who are preparing for the Canada Games. The crew of Andrew Shepherd, Owen Kane, Cameron Munro and Dakin Wilson led from the start and defended their lead all the way down the 2000m course against attacks made by the South Niagara crew. Ontario Team coach Phil Marshal was impressed by the PRC crew's win.
In their first summer season of racing together the Junior women's quad won bronze. Crew members are Katie Essak, Danille Radnor, Lauren Vermeullen and Rebecca Webber.
A new crew combination of brothers Richard Love and Tim Love won the U23 men's pair event. "We really have not been tested in a tough race situation yet which will happen at the Canadian Henley regatta in two weeks. We still need to find some more speed to prepare for a tighter field of racing at the next level" stated Tim Love who bows the pair with younger brother Richard stroking the boat.
Silver medals were won Brent Holmes and partner Robert Baldwin in the Senior mens double.
Peterborough had a team of 39 athletes racing in various boats over the two day regatta. The crews racing in their kelly green colours brought home a total of 11 podium finishes. "The Ontario Championships always provides us with an opportunity to try different crew combinations and have an opportunity to assess our speed against the other clubs." Head coach Carol Love commented." The leadership of some very seasoned athletes has set a high standard for the younger group within the club."
