After thunderstorms cancelled final races on Saturday, the
Peterborough Rowing Club moved on to a strong showing on Sunday winning
three gold medals, two silvers and two bronze medals at the Provincial
Championships held in Welland.
Ashley Holmes led the Peterborough
women to a third place finish in an exciting open women’s eight
race. The women’s
eight race with the largest entry at the regatta provided a exciting
final to the two day event. A strong St Catharines crew led from
the start, second was a crew from Westside RC, and Peterborough followed.
Crew members were Ashley Holmes, Georgia Robinson, Erin Monette,
Joanna Kipp, Paula Simpson, Shannon Young, Rebecca Christensen, Katie
Keast and coxswain Hilary Windrem. Prior to the women’s eight
event the Peterborough women‘s quad placed third. Members were
Robin Love, Ashley Holmes, Joanna Kipp and Georgia Robinson. Gold
medals were won in the Under 23 women’s double by Ashley Holmes and Cheryl Copson. Cheryl Copson won the Under 19 women’s single
race. The Under 19 women’s double race was won by the Don’s
rowing club, and the silver medal went to PRC’s Sophie Monkman and Katie Vanderwal.
On the men’s side Peterborough’s Under 23 men’s
four won gold. Crew members were Mike Davidson, Andrew Nelson, Andrew
Sills and Steven Lewis. Andrew Nelson partnered with Edward Rushton to win silver in the men’s double. Other finalists were the U23
lightweight men’s four (Mark Gilgia, Owen Kane, Graham Pinchin and Mathew McCoy), the lightweight men’s pair (Sean Whitaker and Brad Cutler) and the men’s pair (Mark Basterfield and Christian
Tuters)
Saturday’s finals were delayed due to thunderstorms,
and 33 races were ultimately cancelled. After racing successfully
in morning heats Peterborough athletes were in contention for many
medals and those races went uncontested. “It is tough for the
athletes to put in that amount of training and not have the opportunity
to race, however decisions were based on some extremely unsettled
weather over the weekend that delayed some of the races and after
several delays the day of racing was cancelled,” stated head
coach Carol Love.
Crews will now prepare for the Royal Canadian Henley regatta
August 4-11.
