ROWONTARIO Championships
July 28 & 29, 2007

It was a successful weekend for the Peterborough Rowing Club at the Ontario Championships in Welland. Under sweltering conditions crews rowed in heats, semis and finals, returning home with five golds, two silvers and one bronze.

Cheryl Copson, an Adam Scott student in her first summer season with the club, stunned her competitors with three Gold medal performances. Racing in the junior single final she raced with the goal to win. "At the 1000m mark I was in second and I thought to myself this wasn't going so well. At the 1500m mark, I had drawn up even with the leader, and then I knew I could win the race. At the finish line after the pain subsided, it was an awesome feeling". Copson joined teammate Beth Nelson to win the junior women’s double and then joined older teammates to help win the gold in the Under 23 women’s quad event. The crew consisted of Copson, Jen Tuters, Ashley Holmes, Robin Love. After stroking the quad to victory, Jennifer Tuters struck gold in the U23 women’s single.

Silver medals were won by the U23 double of Ashley Holmes and Robin Love, and the junior women’s quad of Cheryl Copson, Beth Nelson, Rebecca Love, and Grace Cullen.

A bronze medal was won by Sean Whitaker and Brad Cutler in the senior lightweight men's double.

In one of the final races of the weekend Peterborough won the senior men's quad race. Gold medals were awarded to Ed Rushton, Tim Love, Andrew Nelson and Brad Cutler.

Other crews gained valuable race experience. The club is now training in preparation for the Royal Canadian Henley, an internationally recognized regatta which takes place in August.
