Junior WomenA successful regatta for Peterborough RC at the Olympic ’76 course in Montreal this weekend, crews from as far afield as Newfoundland came to compete in Eastern Rowing Association Championships. There were victories from all sections of the club in perfect but hot conditions, most notably the Junior Women’s squad, Women’s Masters and the Men’s Senior Squad had tantalising victories in view of upcoming regattas. The regatta now split over two days to compensate for the increased number of entries, meant that the Saturday races comprised of heats for the finals on the Sunday. Saturday saw some powerful rowing and sensible tactics from the Peterborough crews with most progressing to the finals.

The victories in the finals on the Sunday began with the promising Heavyweight Mens Double of Brent Holmes and Richard Love powering their way to the win, these two then teamed with Andrew Crowe and Christian Tuters to form a solid looking quad who were unfortunately beaten by two excellent crews from Ottawa. The next race after the double featured the Junior Womens eight dominating the final to win comfortably against Ottawa and St Johns. The eight included Radnor, Exton, Gabbane, Jewell, Essak, Armstrong, Adair, Hayes and was coxed by Lapum. The women’s masters double of Fischer and Quirt sped away to victory in their final to beat three Montreal crews and the other Peterborough double. Despite a weaving course and a short drift into an adjacent lane the heavyweight men’s pair of Sills and Davies completed a comfortable victory.

There is an excellent contingent of lightweight rowers in the men’s senior squad this year and were the source of two more victories for Peterborugh. The pair consisting of Andrew Culham and Cameron Munro thrashed the field and cruised to a comfortable win, later teaming up with Olly Kane and Alex ‘Payne Machine’ Payno to continue their impressive domination of the lightweight sweep events by winning the straight four.

Later in the day there was another victory for the junior women’s squad to add to the win in the eight, when the double of Essak and Radnor  beat a tough field. The last victory for Peterborough came in the blue ribbon event , the senior men’s eight. The crew exploded out of the blocks and swiftly had a two length advantage by the 500m mark, the crew then progressed to a comfortable victory after well coxed race by Molly Cargill.

A superb regatta for Peterborough RC seeing the club come second in the Victor Ludorum to the huge Ottawa RC. The club will now be preparing for the RowOntario Championships in two weekends time.
