Spring Training Camp

The club will be taking 45 athletes to a spring training camp in Georgia. It is open to all high school students and club athletes. Novice rowers are also invited to attend, however a good base of fitness from a winter training program is important.

Departure: Thursday, March 12, 2009, at 5:00pm
Return: Saturday, March 21, 2009, returning to Peterborough early morning

Transportation

The team will travel by Coach Canada bus. It is an eighteen hour trip, traveling overnight. The bus makes a number of stops for coffee, washroom break, stretching, etc.

Location

Richard B. Russell State Park, http://www.gastateparks.org/info/richbruss/

Accommodations

The cabins sleep up to eight people. Each cabin has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen, open concept living room with a fireplace and dining area, and screened porch. The bedrooms have two double beds in each. Linen and towels are supplied. Kitchens are equipped with stoves/ovens, fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and dishes. See park Photo Gallery

Rowing Facility

The rowing facility is excellent, with miles of water to row and a 2000m buoyed course.

Food

Excellent nutritious lunches and suppers are provided by our volunteer cooking staff. Each cabin will have food provided for breakfasts and snacks. As in the past, a request for homemade frozen casseroles will assist in our efforts.

Clothing

The weather is variable at this time of year and can be damp. However for the past few years we have had mostly sunny warm weather and cool nights. Work out clothes should consist of layers of long and short Tshirts, tights and spandex shorts, hats, and running shoes. There is a laundry facility near the cabins.

Philosophy

There will be a strong technical component to the rowing sessions in hopes of laying a good foundation for athletes to build upon on their return to Canadian spring rowing. Athletes will row in a variety of boats and crews, sweeping and sculling, with an emphasis on endurance training. Although challenging physically, there is a commitment to fun; beach volleyball and games tournaments, an afternoon of sightseeing and an annual talent night and campfire.

Camp Schedule

A typical day begins with a 7am wake up, followed by a light breakfast. Athletes run to the boathouse (15-20 min run), arriving by 8:30am. Row: 9am-11am. Return by bus to the cabins for lunch and a rest. Row: 2:30-4:30pm. Run/walk back to cabins. Supper at 5:30pm. Evenings are used for free time, or for lectures and video analysis. Bedtime: 10pm. One afternoon we will take off to go sight seeing/shopping and dinner.
